Most of what makes Ruthin worth visiting costs nothing. The two paid attractions — the gaol and Nantclwyd House — are excellent, but the free layer of the town is substantial and satisfying on its own.
The Town Square and Maen Huail
Ruthin's medieval town square (St Peter's Square) is free to walk, free to sit in, and free to photograph. The Myddelton Arms facade — the "eyes of Ruthin" seven-dormer building — is one of the best examples of late-medieval civic architecture in Wales. Maen Huail, the Arthurian stone, stands on the pavement at the square's western edge. According to Welsh legend, Huail son of Caw was beheaded on this stone on the orders of King Arthur. No charge, no enclosure.
St Peter's Church
St Peter's Church is free to enter during daylight hours. The Tudor oak ceiling with over 400 carved panels is exceptional by any standard, and the Davies Brothers wrought-iron gates of 1727 are considered among the finest examples of decorative ironwork in Britain. Allow 30 minutes minimum.
Pendref Chapel
On Well Street, Pendref Chapel (1827) has an elegant ashlar front and a significant literary connection — the building next door at No. 6 was where the Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, was first printed in 1856. The chapel is on the public pavement and viewable at all times.
Ruthin Craft Centre Gallery
Gallery admission at Ruthin Craft Centre is free. The exhibitions change regularly and show contemporary craft work of genuine quality. The resident studios and the sales gallery are also free to browse. Worth 30–45 minutes of any visit.
The Wednesday Market
The Wednesday morning market on the town square costs nothing to walk around. Local produce, Vale of Clwyd farmers, general market goods. It has run on this site since the 13th century. The best free hour in Ruthin.
The Clwydian Range
Walking on the Clwydian Range AONB costs nothing. The paths are public. Moel Famau (554m) is the main summit — reachable from the Bwlch Penbarra car park (small parking charge) in 1.5 hours return, or from Ruthin town on foot. The views are free. The heather in late August and September costs nothing. The car park at Bwlch Penbarra has a small charge; park in Ruthin and walk up if you want the entirely free version.
Castle Grounds
The grounds of Ruthin Castle are within the hotel estate, but the peacocks that roam them occasionally appear near the lane outside — a free encounter with Ruthin's unofficial mascots.
