Ruthin Craft Centre

Ruthin Craft Centre, on Park Road just off the town centre, is one of the leading contemporary craft galleries in Wales — a purpose-built space showing work by makers from across Wales and Britain, with resident studio artists, a programme of changing exhibitions, and a café. It has been a significant cultural anchor for the town and the wider region for decades, and it sits entirely at odds with the assumption that rural Welsh market towns don't do contemporary culture.

The Gallery

The Craft Centre's gallery spaces host a rolling programme of exhibitions featuring jewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles, wood, and mixed-media craft objects. The standard is genuinely high — this is not a gift shop with pretensions but a serious exhibiting venue with a national profile. Work on show is typically for sale, spanning accessible prices to significant collector pieces.

The building itself, completed in 2008, is an award-winning contemporary structure — clean lines, excellent natural light, and a considered relationship with the hillside behind it. It replaced an older facility and gave the Craft Centre space to develop its residential and educational functions as well as the gallery.

Resident Makers

The Craft Centre has a residency programme that keeps working studio artists on site, giving visitors the opportunity to see craft being made rather than simply displayed. The mix of disciplines and makers changes over time. Seeing a ceramicist at the wheel or a jeweller at the bench while you're looking at finished work in the gallery puts the making process in proper context.

Practical Information

The Craft Centre is open Tuesday to Sunday and has free admission to the gallery. The café is a good option for lunch in Ruthin — straightforward food, good coffee, and one of the better views of the surrounding hills you'll find from any café in the region. There is a car park on site.
